Muskogee lies in the Claremore Cuesta Plains geomorphic provide, Cuestas are hills or ridges with a gentle slope on one side and a steep slope on the other side. The Claremore Cuestas are resistant Perriman and Pennsylvanian sandstones, shoes and limestones dipping gently westward. Honor Heights is a good local example lying one mile west of Downtown Muskogee.

Downtown Muskogee is relatively flat with little grade change elevations generally range from 590º mean sea level to 614º mean sea level. The exception are the small hills on the northwest corner of downtown which rise 50º or 60º above surrounding terrain. The 40º high ridge west of the Arrowhead Mall along 6th Street is a particularly prominent feature. Its grade made steeper due to earthwork and grading during the mall construction.

The urban soils in the downtown area are poor and compacted Historic soils are Dennis-Bates-Taloka-Parsons Millisals and Alffisols typical of the tall grass prairie region.

Drainage is generally good with no floodplains in the downtown area.

Muskogee is home to Oklahoma’s oldest and first institution of higher education, Bacone College. Bacone College was established in 1880 and continues to preserve many of the historical buildings and monuments of the time. Muskogee is home of “Agency Hill” and the Five Civilized Tribes. Muskogee is known for its ports as it converges on the Verdigris, Arkansas and Grand Rivers. This was Oklahoma’s first port that led to the Gulf of Mexico. The final resting place of Bass Reaves is located in Muskogee, OK. Tuskogee Airmen, Faythe McGinnis and Robert C. Smith’s final resting place is located in Muskogee. The stretch of U.S. 69 that runs by this cemetery has been named the Faythe McGinnis Memorial Highway.

Muskogee offers a variety of specialty clothing shops from locally owned vendors to major retail establishments such as TJ Maxx and Ross Department Stores. We have several antique shops and flea markets along with grocery stores from Walmart, Homeland and Cash Savers among others.
